The project’s relevance

Native herbs used in traditional medicine can be found and used easily and at low cost to treat common diseases.

How it works

Benjamin commercialises organic herbal teas in order to establish a subsidised sustainable distribution channel.

The goal of this subsidised distribution channel is to facilitate access to scientifically proven medicinal herb treatments for people in rural areas.

Hibiscus sabdariffa

Hibiscus sabdariffa, also called “bissap” in West Africa or “karkadé” in the Middle East, is an herb that lowers blood pressure.

This capacity has been scientifically validated and, as such, it is an effective replacement for pharmaceutical drug treatments.

Its use is especially relevant in Africa where the World Health Organization has identified that, on average 30% of adults suffer from high blood pressure.

Medicinal herbal tea production

Benjamin grows many other herbs, such as lippia alba (a painkiller), combretum micrantum (to lower blood pressure), guava leaves (for bowel problems), moringa (an antioxidant).

In the near future he plans to develop essential oils as well.

Solar dryer

In the mountainous region of Bangoulap, the moisture in the air and the mist complicate the drying of medicinal herbs.

A solar dryer is currently being tested to improve the drying of herbal tea leaves for production
