The project’s relevance

In Cameroon, millions of people do not have access to their own energy supply.

How it works

Freddy’s activity is an innovative solar kit distribution and leasing model. It allows him to reach people in remote areas thanks to cocoa farmer cooperatives. These groups of people are created locally all around the country and meet regularly to address issues and act in their own best interests..

Access to energy means: lighting and phone charging

The high-quality solar kits that Freddy sells are engineered to meet local and basic needs: lighting and phone charging. In Cameroon, the sun sets daily at around 18:00. This makes it hard for people to carry out activities after dusk. In remote areas, phones and their charging are crucial since they are also used to coordinate lives and work with people outside of their village.

Affordability

The high-quality solar kits are made available thanks to payments in instalments: cocoa farmers pay a small amount of money (about what they would spend weekly on kerosene for lighting and on phone charging) to the guarantor of their cooperative during their weekly meetings. After a year of payments, the solar kit is theirs to keep.

This is Joseph’s house. He is a member of the Gaby cooperative in central Cameroon.

Business model sustainability

The people who are guarantors for their cooperatives receive a percentage of the solar kit sales for their coordination work. This secures Freddy’s business model as the guarantors play key roles and have influence in their associations and on the people who they receive money from. They have the social influence to ensure that the payment of instalments is respected.

The gradual repayment of the solar kits via different associations allows Freddy to invest money and time in other regions as he reaches out to new associations and networks.
