Mooncakes Are Seasonal. So, How Profitable Is the Business?
As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, mooncakes start appearing everywhere.
From bakeries and hotels to restaurants and home-based businesses, everyone offers their own selection of mooncakes at different price points.
It looks like a great business opportunity.
But there’s one simple question:
So, how profitable is a mooncake business, really?
Let’s break it down with a simple example.
What If You Sell 1,000 Mooncakes?
Let’s say a business sells mooncakes at an average price of:
Rp50,000 per piece
If 1,000 pieces are sold:
Revenue = Rp50 million
Sounds pretty good.
But revenue is not the same as profit.
We need to look at the costs required to produce and sell each mooncake.
Example Cost per Mooncake:
-
Ingredients: Rp20,000
-
Packaging: Rp7,000
-
Marketing & distribution: Rp5,000
-
Other operating costs: Rp3,000
Total cost:
Rp35,000 per piece
So:
Selling price: Rp50,000
Total cost: Rp35,000
Profit: Rp15,000 per piece
If all 1,000 pieces are sold:
Estimated profit = Rp15 million
From Rp50 million in revenue, the estimated profit is Rp15 million.
But there’s another challenge.
What If You Don't Sell All the Mooncakes?
Mooncakes are highly seasonal.
Demand may increase significantly around the festival, but the selling period is relatively short.
Let’s say you planned to sell 1,000 pieces, but only 800 are sold.
Your revenue would drop to:
800 × Rp50,000 = Rp40 million
Meanwhile, some production costs may have already been spent upfront.
This is where financial planning becomes important.
The question isn't only:
“How much can I make if everything sells?”
It should also be:
“How many units do I need to sell to break even?”
So, Is Selling Mooncakes Profitable?
The answer isn't simply yes or no.
Profitability depends on several factors: selling price, cost of goods sold, sales volume, production capacity, marketing expenses, packaging costs, and ultimately, how much product you actually sell.
That’s why it’s important to calculate the business before producing thousands of mooncakes.
How much capital do you need?
How many units do you need to sell to break even?
How much profit can you generate if you hit your sales target?
And what happens if you only achieve 70–80% of your sales target?
The festival may only last for a few days.
But the business decision needs to be planned with numbers.
